The farmer who produces a material for the best tatami got a prize “Emperor’s trophy”

In current Japan, their life is becoming like an European
so that opportunities to be with the tatami in their life is being reduced.

Some of them has no room of the tatami, and also some of their children has grown
by no opportunities to be with the tatami at home.

But on the other hand, there are needs of the tatami at Japanese-style hotels and temples.
Also facilities where upgrade the tatami rooms for foreigner customers are increasing.

Farmers who produce materials of the tatami and people who processes the tatami are
still putting their efforts to produce high quality of the tatami and new ideas of the tatami products.

The best locality of
“rush grass”
a material of the tatami, is in Kumamoto, Kyushu area, the South and West part of Japan.
Japanese rush grass is produced about 80 ~ 90% in here.

Some farmers are particular about producing good quality of rush grass to producing the best tatami.

In last Autumn, one of a farmer who produces the best rush grass got an authoritative prize.

It is called
“Emperor’s trophy”
the best prize in
“Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries show”
held by Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Japan.
This farmer has been a rush grass farmer with their efforts while demands of the tatami has been reduced.

But he said
“Because of this prize, I’ve been encouraged from the tatami industry.”

Producing the tatami and materials of it in Japan are still an important industry.
