Speaking of festivals in Japan, most people imagine brave, glorious, history, traditions, and so on.
“Hakata Gion Yamakasa” is a festival representing the biggest city in Kyushu area, Fukuoka.

It has more than 750 years of history, and a lot of people are excited.
Also, it’s held from July 1st to July 15th this year.

“Yamakasa” is a ritual utensil that is used at festivals of shrines.
Before the Meiji Period, 15 meters of Yamakasa walked around the town.
But recently, former Yamakasa is remained as “Kazari Yamakasa (Decorated Yamakasa)”, and on the other hand,
shorter Yamakasa “Kaki Yamakasa” is made and carried.

After the ceremony to cleanse the town, we can see Yamakasa on the first day of the festival, July 1st.
In July 12th, it’s necessary to see “Oiyama Narashi”, that is a rehearsal for “Oiyama” in July 15th that
Yamakasa runs through 4km of distance.

At 4:59 AM on July 15th, “Oiyama” begins with the first Yamakasa carried to Kushida-Jinja Shrine,
where is the headquarter of Yamakasa, with signs by base drums.

Then, carried Yamakasa into Kushida-Jinja Shrine at fixed intervals runs through the Hakata town.

In Kushida-Jinja Shrine, Yamakasa is exhibited throughout a year, so that people can see powerful Yamakasa
all the time.

Also, “Hakata Machiya Furusatokan”, one minute in a walk from Kushida-Jinja Shrine, is a popular facility
to see and feel traditional crafts in Hakata and the atmosphere of historical buildings;
there are a lot of view points like a well that has effects for a youth and long life, a trial stone of strength, a mask of “Otafuku” that is seen in February when is around the season of Setsubun (February 3rd), and so on.

Its tasteful looks of the Japanese style house suite with rickshaws.
It’s not only to introduce the life and the culture of Hakata, but also to sell traditional crafts and famous confections, and to experience Hakata cloth.

People can see the Japanese room at the historical Japanese style house and works of traditional crafts on
the tatami.
