Overwhelming power in a sacred mountain, Mt. Takao “Fire-walking Festival” and “Shukubo” with high status Japanese atmosphere
Since long time ago, Mt. Takao has been known as the sacred mountain.
It has 599 meters above sea level and be located in Hachioji City in Tokyo.
It is easy to climb so that well known as the mountain for climbing, and the number of mountain climbers in a year is 2,500,000 people.
On the other hand, Mt. Takao is known as Tengu beliefs, and famous as the mountain of “Shugendo” that is to train hard in the mountain.
A lot of people did “Yamabushi” training to master Shugendo since long time ago.
“Mt. Takao Fire-walking Festival” is held every year, and it is a big event to see Shugendo.

Fire-walking Festival is done to pray for the peaceful world and no disasters, and it’s the beginning of the festival, it is so powerful by a sutra and a shooting ceremony.
The first firing “Gomataki Start”, surrounded by smoke and nothing can see by it, is necessary to see.
The most important scene of Fire-walking Festival is to walk on the fire.
yamabushi who cleaned theirselves by hot water, walk on the hot ground, that remains firing trees, by bare feet while playing a conch horn and sutra.
It is surely powerful.
And then, after training of yamabushi, general participants can trip fire-walking.
Though the fire is calming, it is to walk on the hot ground with bare feet, so please don’t punish yourself too much!
Fire-walking Festival is held by “Mt. Takao Yakuo-in Temple”, and there is an accommodation called “Shukubo”.
Two times in a year, it is in the spring and the autumn, this Shukubo velds a training experience for a night.
Everyone can attend it by booking in advance.
This spring, it is held from 6/1 to 6/2.
Shukubo is a building fulfilled with high status in front of mountains, it remains former looks that built at the beginning of the Showa Period.
There is a big Tengu mask at the entrance, and when you step up the stairs, you can see the tasteful view with a contrast between Shukubo and the nature.
In the tatami floored silent Japanese room, you can eat Shojin-Ryori, foods that don’t use any meat and fish.
Shukubo are not open every day, so please check it by HP in advance!
